SOLAR ENERGY IS ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY. WHEN IN USE, IT DOES NOT RELEASE CO2 AND OTHER GASES WHICH POLLUTE THE AIR. HENCE IT IS VERY SUITABLE FOR INDIA, INDIA BEING ONE OF THE MOST POLLUTED COUNTRIES OF THE WORLD. SOLAR POWER IS INEXHAUSTIBLE. IN AN ENERGY DEFICIENT COUNTRY LIKE INDIA, WHERE POWER GENERATION IS COSTLY, SOLAR ENERGY IS THE BEST ALTERNATE MEANS OF POWER GENERATION. THUS THERE IS NO GENERATION DURING NIGHTS AND OVERCAST CONDITIONS THE EFFICIENCY IS ONLY 20% AND THE PAYBACK PERIOD IS LARGE (AROUND 8-10 YEARS) 5 • WIND ENERGY WIND ENERGY IS GENERATED DUE TO UNEVEN HEATING OF THE EARTH’S SURFACE AND IT CAN BE USED TO GENERATE ELECTRICITY USING WIND TURBINE. WIND POWER PROJECTS CAN BE VERY STIMULATING FOR LOCAL ECONOMIES. THE INSTALLED WIND POWER CAPACITY OF INDIA IS 23444 MW AS OF 2014. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE SYSTEM IS AROUND 60%. WIND ENERGY IS ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY AND DOES NOT CAUSE GREEN HOUSE GASES. 6 • LIMITATIONS: THE WIND IS IRREGULAR AND CONSISTENT WIND IS NEEDED FOR CONTINUOUS POWER GENERATION. LARGE AREA IS REQUIRED FOR SETTING UP OF A WIND GENERATION SYSTEM PLUS THE CAPITAL COST IS ALSO QUITE HIGH. 7 • THE HYBRID SYSTEM UTILITY CONNECTED WITH BATTERY BANK. THEREFORE BACKUP IS PROVIDED IF THE UTILITY GRID GOES DOWN AND ALSO IF THE WEATHER IS INSUFFICIENT FOR SOLAR AND WIND SYSTEMS THE COMBINATION OF THE TWO SYSTEMS NOT ONLY UTILISES THE ADVANTAGES OF BOTH OF THEM, BUT ALSO REDUCES THE LIMTATIONS OF EACH OF THEM THE DESIGN AND INSTALLATION MAY BE EXPENSIVE AND COMPLEX, BUT THEY ARE EFFECTIVE IN PROVIDING CONTINUOUS AND RELIABLE ELECTRICITY ALONG WITH REDUCED CARBON EMISSION UPTO 72000 KWH OF ENERGY CAN BE SAVED USING THIS SYSTEM. THE PAYBACK PERIOD IS ONLY ABOUT 5 YEARS.
